Senator David Harper's Campaign Rally (aka Halloween)

Monday, November 2, 2009

My campaign had supporters coming out of the wood work, with donations coming from such luminaries as Holly Golightly and Jason

This past Saturday was Halloween, and as per usual it was incredible. Halloween is pretty much my favorite holiday, and this one was extra special because it was probably my most all in Halloween ever as I really went for it on the costume front. Not that my costume was really that big of a deal, but the work I did before and for it was, as Senator David Harper turned his apartment into a glorious campaign headquarters for one evening (does that count as third person?).

The campaign rally/Halloween party was a blast for all that joined in, and I really think I earned some serious voters out of this bunch. It's good to know when November 3rd hits I can count Holly Golightly, Jason (Friday the 13th), Oscar the Grouch, Marilyn Monroe, Billy Mays, and many more out there to vote for me. I'd go into more detail, but it was your standard awesome Halloween party: drinking games, LeBomb James' (shot of Crown with a splash of Grenadine and Red Bull, after you're done throw sugar in the air ala LeBron James), awesome costumes, intense beer pong (Eric and I had an all time one on one match up), and much, much more. The only negative was that campaign central was trashed the next day, but oddly enough that led to my apartment being cleaner than it has been in forever.

Works for me.

I have to admit, now that Halloween is over, I'm a little sad I won't be referred to as "Senator" any more, but all things have their phases. Could stand to have that one last a little bit longer though. See below for pictures from the shenanigans.

Halloween is a very important holiday for me. Some people don't really put that much effort into their costumes, but on a yearly basis I really try to give it my all because it's a fun outlet for creativity and when you do a good job people actually really seem to enjoy what you've done. The last few years I've been on fire, as my Hamburglar and Evel Knievel costumes have been well received, creative, and home made. Of course, I wouldn't have been able to do that without the help of a number of people (my mom, Amy, Kim and my boss to name a few), and I really appreciate that.

No less, with Halloween rapidly approaching, I was stuck between two ideas: dressing up as Max from Where the Wild Things Are or Bea Arthur's character from Golden Girls as part of a group costume. I wasn't crazy about either because I figured there'd be other Max's out and the Golden Girls idea just wasn't my style. Then at Amy's goodbye dinner, we came up with a great and incredibly original idea: Senator David Harper.

It's not that dressing up as a candidate version in itself is that great (it's just a suit after all), but if you really go for it, it can really work for you. So what I've done recently has been go for it (almost to absurd lengths), as I worked with a graphic designer who works in my office to have buttons designed (500 count!) and a campaign poster created (see the top) for enhancement of the costume. Then, I created a propaganda poster using Paste Magazine's awesome Obamicon.me site and Joanne and I put them up all across downtown and midtown Anchorage. Basically, if you go to a bar or coffee shop in that area, you'll see my face demanding that you party.

Then, I created a Facebook fan page, a Twitter page, a blog and an email address and randomly noted that on each of the posters (before putting them up of course). This all adds up to the first viral costume I've ever even heard of. It's pretty entertaining as well, as various Anchorage based news outlets are following me. The prospect terrifies me, as I hope to god they realize this is a joke. Someone questioned a friend of mine wondering what I was going to get out of this. Well, simply put, I'm going to get a really good time out of it. I'm taking it fake seriously, but really it just gives me an entertaining creative outlet for a couple weeks, and allows me to be truly original on my costume again.

So yeah, that's that. I was going to wait until Halloween to announce this on here, but it doesn't really matter. No one should think this is serious, unless you're handing out a button of mine or putting up one of my posters. In that case, you should be utterly serious and suggest to the person that they should vote for David Harper in 2010. He's the Party Party candidate, and he's running for the U.S. Senate seat in Alaska.

Have a good Halloween all, and make sure to support me on the pages below and by god, if you see me on Halloween, buy your candidate a drink!

Thanks to Michael Kim for designing everything, Joanne for helping distribute everything, and everyone else for your support. Yes we can!

The (Halloween) Weekend Edition

Sunday, November 2, 2008

Ah Halloween. Strangely one of my favorite holidays, as it is always so full of ridiculousness and costumes. How many other days a year can a person wear a cape and burgers on their tie and feel like not only a normal person, but a really magnificent one at that?

Not many.

That's for sure. So what else transpired?

  • Amy's Halloween party
  • Bars with Lee, Jimmy, and Cullan
  • Impromptu bad movie night with guy dressed in V costume and Amazon girl
  • Zack and Miri with Lorna, Colver, Cullan, and Lee
  • Chilling and reading at Kaladi's (almost done with the Hellboy series and another book)
  • Dinner with parents at Lone Star (boo Lone Star)
  • Loving daylight savings with a passion
  • Coffee with my sister
  • Football with Hannah, Jason, and Amy (the Green Bay/Tennessee game was massively entertaining)
  • Rocking out with Puma Town on Rock Band 2
  • Watching the Pats give it the old college try against the Colts (I would slap you in the face right now David Thomas...you too Jabar Gaffney)

Another very full weekend, although I must admit, Sundays where I sit around and watch football all day, while awesome, do make me feel pretty damn lazy. Not good lazy, like "did I really just spend 7 straight hours watching football?" lazy. But that's neither here nor there.

Halloween is the subject at hand.

Cate, Amy, and I at the party

Amy and her roommates (she lives in what can be best described as a house that has been turned into two connected apartments) threw a party, and I attended dressed as the Hamburglar. It was a really awesome party, full of a lot of great people (attended by such luminaries as Lorna, Colver, Cate, Darren, Eric, Lee, Cullan, Jimmy, Jessie, Forrest, Brianna, and many, many more), good food and drinks, a live DJ, and no less than two smoke machines. Typically, a good party has one smoke machine. If you have two....well.

That's just a great party now isn't it.

Surprisingly enough, the majority of the crowd stayed at the party pretty much the whole time, and I only ventured out for a bit with Lee, Cullan, and Jimmy to the Anchor. We weren't really feeling it though, so we (or rather, they dropped me off) ventured back to the party for more good times. Now take this how you will, but a rather unforeseen event was the highlight of the evening for me. Also, this doesn't mean the rest of the night was bad in any way. It just means this was awesome.

After trying to find my keys (and other belongings for a good while) I gave up and went upstairs with the remaining party goers. I sat on a futon with two people: Dani's (one of Amy's roommates) brother, who was dressed as V from V for Vendetta, and unknown astrology enthralled Amazon girl (named that because I don't know her name and the only time I really hung out with her before then she went on and on for astrology). Halloween 3: Season of the Witch was on the TV, and everyone else was on full party mode but we all apparently had one thing on our minds.

Impromptu bad movie night.

We went on to watch the rest of the movie making jokes about nearly everything that happened, jokes that my fellow BMV (bad movie night) hall of famer Brian would be damn proud of. We laughed, we cried (from laughing so hard), we had a hell of a great time. Strangely enough, looking back on it, I honestly think that might have been my favorite part of the night. I guess that's why Halloween is so great. You really never know what it's going to bring you, but odds are it will be stupendous and not what you expect.

You gotta love that.

Happy Halloween from the Hamburglar!
