Favorite Albums of 2008 - Part 1

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

I love lists so much. Going through them and ranking everything is an awesome time guaranteed for me, even though it's a lot of work typically. As part of the end of the year, I'm provided many list opportunities which I will be rolling out over the next weekend. I'm going to start with my favorite albums of 2008, but before I unveil my top 20 of 2008, I'm going to share the ones that didn't make it.

So see below for my 21st to 50th favorite albums of the year, and yes, I did actually listen to this much music this year. This isn't even the full list, amazingly enough.

This also further closes the gap between myself and Pitchfork's taste in music, which scares me a lot. While they had plenty of music I didn't have (or have ever heard of for that matter), we had a lot of overlap in favorite albums. Which I hate. Kind of.

21. The Hold Steady – Stay Positive

I have a tough time making lists because they always end up changing down the road. My top 25 in it's current order is:

1. Hot Chip - Made in the Dark

3. The Walkmen - You and Me
4. David Byrne and Brian Eno -
Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
5. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
6. Portishead - Third
7. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals
8. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
9. Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer
10. Ghostland Observatory - Robotique Majestique
11. The Bug - London Zoo
12. Hercules And Love Affair - Hercules And Love Affair
13. Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
14. No Age - Nouns
15. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
16. M83 - Saturdays = Youth
17. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
18. Max Tundra - Parallax Error Beheads You
19. Ratatat - LP3
20. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
21. Animal Collective - Water Curses (even though it's an ep)
22. Beach House - Devotion
23. WHY? - Alopecia
24. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
25. Fucked Up - Chemistry of Common Life

This list is subject to change. It's always interesting to see which albums I get hooked on later. The top 10 are definately my most played this year. Looking back, it was a great year for tunes.

That's funny, I think at your bachelor party you said you didn't know how much you liked the Walkmen. It's really surprising to see it there at #3.

I need to post my list tonight. I'll get on that soon.

I've never listened to Why?, Beach House, Max Tundra, or Fucked Up. I'll need to check them out.

My top list is so much poppier than yours. I love pop!

Also, I was not a fan at all of Robotique Majestique. I know it's kind of ridiculous saying this about them, but that album was way too unfocused.

Also, that's the biggest problem. My top 10 has been so listened to so much I'm already kind of folding on them and am really digging on other stuff, and it seems to constantly change. My top 20 will likely be drastically different in one month.

Very surprised to not see Deerhunter's Microcastle on your list. It's a great album and seems to fill your niche. I guess not!

I'm ashamed to say that even with how much I've been told that Deerhunter album is great, I've only listened to it once! I tried to squeeze in a few listens before this list, but it didn't happen. Beachhouse is opening for the Walkmen in Jan so I'm pretty excited about that. I think you could really like Max Tundra. It's like if Animal Collective went pop and sang about hilarious things like myspace dating. We listened to Ghostland so much at work that the album became a catalyst for dance party playlists in the lab so I have a soft spot for it. I do like Paparazzi lightning more though. I ended up really liking that walkmen album obviuosly. I don't know what changed, I guess I gave it some good listening time, previously I had only listened to it at work and being the bass heavy album it is, the sub at work didn't do it justice to it kept coming across too distorted. Sorry for the lack of paragraphs or structure. I'm kind of buzzed and lazy.
